When Strauss wrote his operettas, bats had a much larger choice of habitat. His waltzes stand for a model of society in which men and women, social strata and ethnic groups could mix freely. Today those achievements are sometimes badmouthed, while anthropocentric hubris spells social and ecological disaster.
